Formerly known as Old Merchants National Bank, The Milton Battle Creek apartment community is a historic landmark building initially constructed in the exciting, transformative era of the 1930s. Visitors were greeted by 2,000 tons of gray Bedford limestone, and this 19-story skyscraper was said to be the first bank in the United States to have escalators. Equal parts inviting and technologically savvy for the time-period, patrons stored valuables in a vault with a 2,000-pound stainless-steel door and partook in onsite retail, ladies and gentlemen’s lounges, and a ballroom. Blocks of Roman marble, a 1,200-pound suspended light fixture, and boldly unique murals designed by Alexander Rindskopf of Chicago made this former place of commerce in downtown Battle Creek, MI a sight to behold.
