There are some great people, doing great things in the City of Battle Creek. We all know that the city, especially downtown, has been through some rough times, but it is primed and ready for a renaissance. From new breweries to luxury apartments at The Milton, there is no shortage of development taking place with thriving new Battle Creek businesses and existing ones continuing to grow.
To say any single party or organization should take credit for spurring the development push would be inaccurate, but there is one organization devoted to specifically this. In July of 2017, The Economic Development Fund at the Cereal City Development Corporation was introduced to Battle Creek and they’ve been an integral part of bringing the downtown vision to life ever since. This development team has been so successful that the City of Battle Creek recently brought them on to be a part of the local government, only strengthening their influence and impact on the downtown area.
The 2018 – 2019 Small Business Development Performance Dashboard, a tracker that accounts for growth through the launch or expansion of new business in which the Small Business Development Team had a part in, shows an amazingly positive trend:
- Small Business Investment: $4,549,000.00
- Small Business Job Creation: 120
- Business Launch: 27
- Business Expansion: 6
With these numbers, it’s hard for investors to look away, which is why The Milton is going up at a perfect time. According to Jacquie McLean, Marketing and Promotions Specialist for the City of Battle Creek’s Economic Development Team, “The Milton’s 85 housing units will create residential critical mass, providing a captive audience that will frequent existing business and create a demand for additional services. The commercial component will provide 20,000 sq. ft. of turn key leasable space, drawing additional downtown visitors and employees. The complete rehabilitation of this historic structure will change the narrative downtown.” Luxury, Downtown Battle Creek housing has been needed in the city for many years, and it’s finally here to provide existing and incoming small business with repeat customers for years to come, making the Cereal City’s downtown district a great place to live, work, and play in Battle Creek, MI!
